What We Do

Each year, about 400 children in New Hanover and Pender counties in the 6th Judicial District are removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect or drug dependency and placed in foster or kinship homes. They are removed from everything that is familiar to them, including their school or any friends. While very basic needs like food and shelter are covered, these children often have missed school due to their home circumstances but then fall farther behind due to placement changes — leaving them disconnected, struggling in school and at risk for future challenges or a life of crime.

For 25 years, the nonprofit Cape Fear Guardian Ad Litem Association (CFGALA) has stood beside these children, partnering with court-appointed volunteer guardian ad litem advocates to meet their unique needs. Through the generosity of donors, CFGALA provides everything from tutoring, summer camp, dance, arts, recreational sports teams and therapeutic activities — ensuring every child in foster care feels supported, loved and empowered to succeed. All GALs are volunteers and CFGALA is run entirely by a volunteer board with no paid employees.

Shana’s First Birthday Party

Three young girls scramble into the movie, “Frozen 2,” full of smiles and giggles. They are celebrating Shana’s 10th birthday. It is Shana’s very first birthday party and her first friends ever.  Before this happy moment, Shana had been removed from her mother’s care twice, lived in four foster homes, and even had several stays in behavior treatment facilities.  Shana’s early life offered no structure, erratic school attendance and a single mother who loves her but due to substance abuse was incapable of raising a child. Shana was left with no idea how to behave or what to say or do. Then Shana was placed in a foster home with loving and compassionate parents and four doting siblings. She blossomed, received academic tutoring thanks to CFGALA, caught up in school and made friends. And now she is able to enjoy her “first” birthday party and soon her first family vacation to Great Wolf Lodge, all because of resources CFGALA could offer, thanks to the generosity of donors who wanted to help change her story.

Helping Foster Kids Be Kids

Cape Fear Guardian ad Litem Association (CFGALA) provides funding for foster and kinship children to cover essential needs that go beyond basic care—things that help them grow, learn, and thrive. Many kinship placements receive little to no support, making extras like tutoring, sports, camps, and enrichment programs out of reach. CFGALA steps in to help cover these costs, ensuring every child has the chance to just be a kid.
