North Carolina provides trained, independent advocates to represent and promote the best interests of abused, neglected, and dependent children within the North Carolina state court system. Established in 1983 as a division of the North Carolina Office of the Courts, the Guardian ad Litem office equips community volunteers to serve abused and neglected children by advocating for their best interests in court.
The 5th District GAL office serves the children of New Hanover and Pender Counties. The collaborative model of Guardian ad Litem attorney advocates, volunteers, and staff ensures that all North Carolina children who are alleged by the Department of Social Servces to have been abused or neglected receive Guardian Ad Litem legal advocacy services.
